A friend bought me a voodoo doll recently. This is what it said on the packaging: “Brave and full of passion, the Red Demon Voodoo Doll will empower you to be confident and courageous like never before!”
So far, it seems to be working. You can form your own conclusions on how much this is down to the power of suggestion versus the existence of actual, real voodoo. Personally I’d go for magic every time.
I hung it up on the edge of the bookshelf next to my desk. It’s always there, in my peripheral vision, willing me on. “Do it!” it says. “Do it now!” And, obedient servant that I am, I carry out its bidding.

It freaks the hell out of the Mrs though. She says it looks like a psychotic version of me. She finds the staple in its mouth – which I suspect is merely a lo-fi set of fangs – completely disturbing.
Every time she sits down at the desk to use the computer, she turns it away from view. Within seconds, completely of its own accord, it twists itself back round and continues to stare at her…

I agree about the weird staple mouth. And what’s that in its hand – a club? To beat you with if you don’t obey? Of course voodoo works – be careful!
Anyway, if its making you do things you want to do then all is well.
I think I might concoct a mascot to hang over my desk, to cure procrastination.
Not sure about the thing in its hand. I don’t feel threatened by it. Yeah, it’s obviously some sort of weapon, but I get the feeling it’s more likely to be used in my defence than against me. A comrade in arms, maybe – let’s do battle against the world?
And anyway, should it ever turn against me it’ll bite off more than it can chew… Mercury divided is mercury doubled; the hydra grows two more heads for every one that gets chopped off. What doesn’t destroy me makes me stronger, and so on.
