Favourite Music Of 2007: Navigating The Bronze

This year I’m going for an Olympic-style bronze/silver/gold approach to my favourite music list. So, in some kind of nebulous third place, these are the albums (or individual tracks, in a few cases) that I enjoyed greatly for a month or so, before moving on to newer pastures.

  • Andrew Weatherall – The Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice
  • Annie Lennox – Songs Of Mass Destruction
  • Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
  • Architecture In Helsinki – Places Like This
  • Beans On Toast – You Look A Lot Fitter On Your MySpace Picture
  • Bjork – Volta
  • Black Strobe – Brenn Di Ega Kjerke
  • Bonde Do Role – With Lasers
  • Bright Eyes – Cassadaga
  • Buraka Som Sistema – From Buraka To The World
  • Cold War Kids – Robbers & Cowards
  • Devendra Banhart – Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon
  • Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton – Knives Don’t Have Your Back
  • Eugene McGuinness – The Early Learnings Of Eugene McGuinness
  • Gallows – Orchestra Of Wolves
  • iLIKETRAINS – Elegies To Lessons Learnt
  • Kings Of Leon – Because Of The Times
  • Klaxons – Myths Of The Near Future
  • Kristin Hersh – Learn To Sing Like A Star
  • Leafcutter John – The Forest & The Sea
  • Liars – Liars
  • M.I.A.. – Kala
  • Maps – We Can Create
  • Newton Faulkner – Hand Built By Robots
  • Ray Lamontagne – When The Sun Turns Black
  • Roisin Murphy – Overpowered
  • Rory McVicar – Now That You’re Mine
  • Sinead O’Connor – Theology
  • Stuart James – Waifs and Strays
  • Tunng – Good Arrows

Most were released during 2007, though one or two of them were stragglers from the previous year. In an ideal world I’d say a few words about each of them, but as we’re now into double-digit dates in January, I don’t want to delay things much further than I have already.
However, I’m very happy to entertain discussion, derision, dissent, delight and demands for micro-reviews in the comments, if you fancy a bit of interactivity. I’m already beginning to wonder whether I’ve been a bit too harsh in dismissing Klaxons and Emily Haines at this stage…
