Knots

“They are playing a game. They are playing at not playing a game. If I show them I see they are, I shall break the rules and they will punish me. I must play their game, of not seeing I see the game.”

Jean commented on my appropriation of RD Laing’s The Divided Self title a couple of days ago. This reminded me that I owned a copy of his Knots for years, before lending it out and never seeing it again.
No problem: there’s an online version. It might not be comprehensive and it certainly doesn’t have the satisfying feel of my black-covered 1970s Penguin copy, but it’s enough.

Oooh, thanks for this! Longer than I care to remember since my Laing phase. You would have been, um, in junior school I think….

I have that book on my shelf – a Random House/Vintage paperback from 1972, still wearing the original price tag ($1.65). Got it from a friend who was cleaning out her collection. Tried to read it once, and didn’t get very far. Maybe it’s something one has to read at a certain age.
