So many reasons to love Lil’ Chris. Quite apart from his previously discussed Lene Lovich / Siouxsie Sioux squawk of a voice and the almost Suicide-al purity of his perfect three minute pop-rock songs, there’s his sad, intense little face and disjointed dancing. I swear that Lou Reed must have looked something like this when he was twelve years old.
And then there’s the new video for Gettin’ Enough. It might be presented as a spoof 80s American puberty & sex education film, but the tone is overwhelmingly British. As phrases like “pounding the organ” flash up on screen and Chris twitches away with mic in hand, we’re undeniably in Carry On Jerking territory (in both senses of the word).
Younger readers should watch and learn. The Gettin’ Enough video is instructive as much in the art of rock ‘n’ roll as in The Changes Your Body Is Going Through. It’s young, dumb and full of enthusiasm. Older readers might prefer merely to smile smugly and to sing the words to The Buzzcocks’ Ever Fallen In Love With Someone to the tune of the song’s chorus.
Lil’ Chris plays London Islington Academy on 14 December. I am accompanying Niece #1 and friends. To say that I can’t wait would be a considerable understatement.
