Official: Not Going Mad

It’s been another one of those “burning the candle at both ends” weeks. Very enjoyable in many ways and I certainly feel considerably more lively at 1am on Saturday morning than I have any right to.
Driving home from work on “Wednesday evening”, I realised that it was five minutes to one in the morning and that the Bush ultimatum to Saddam Hussein was about to reach its 48-hour deadline. I tuned the car radio in to BBC Radio 4, only to hear the typically fusty-sounding announcer indicating that the station was going off the air until 5:30am and that they were about to transfer over to the BBC World Service for the next four and a half hours.
“… so, on behalf of the BBC, this is Zebedee Soames wishing you a very good night. Goodnight.”
Then the National Anthem played, sounding rather like a wobbly old 78rpm gramophone record.
Hold on.
Pause.
Rewind.
Zebedee Soames? Naah, must’ve heard it wrong. Jeremy, probably. I mentioned it in passing to someone the following day and thought nothing more of it.
Driving home slightly earlier tonight (and not from work this time, thankfully), it popped back into my head. I’ll do a quick Google on this, I thought, just a couple of minutes to satisfy my curiosity. Lo and behold, my ears did not deceive me. Apart from the difference of opinion on the spelling, this page provides confirmation. What a fabulous name! Cult hero in the making?

and if things go wrong for him, he’ll always bounce back.
Reminds of some primary school assembly, when two of th lads were playing James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They made an unforgettable entrance – bouncing.

LBC in one of its previous incarnations had Richard Costabadi doing the sport and Charles Amponsah as a reporter. Then there’s Petroc Trelawny on Radio 3. Marvellous…
