Genesis Or Genocide?

Doctor: ‘If someone who knew the future, pointed out a child to you and told you that that child would grow up totally evil, to be a ruthless dictator who would destroy millions of lives… could you then kill that child?’
Sarah Jane Smith: ‘We’re talking about the Daleks. The most evil creatures ever invented. You must destroy them. You must complete your mission for the Time Lords!’
Doctor: ‘Do I have the right? Simply touch one wire against the other and that’s it. The Daleks cease to exist. Hundreds of millions of people, thousands of generations can live without fear… in peace, and never even know the word “Dalek”.’
Sarah Jane Smith: ‘Then why wait? If it was a disease or some sort of bacteria you were destroying, you wouldn’t hesitate.’
Doctor: ‘But if I kill. Wipe out a whole intelligent life form, then I become like them. I’d be no better than the Daleks.’

I remember this one, it annoyed me at the time.
I’ve been through the pacifist-non-interventionist bit since, but now I’m with Sarah Jane again. The Doctor wimped out.
Did the Dalek’s ever claim to be doing their business (a lot of exterminationg mainly I guess) for the public good?
    I think not.
Does that make it OK for the Dr to do use such a claim if he exterminates them?
    Again, probably not.
But he’s a Time Lord for gord’s sake! Time Lords are supposed to be arrogant opinionated gits aren’t they? Isn’t that what it’s all about?
Like Tone and Dubya they’re there to make these decisions.
    It’s their job.
And if they get it wrong we’re all fecked.
It wasn’t like that in Dr Who, was it?

Sorry about the three trackbacks. I really have very little idea of what I’m doing with trackback at this stage, but I’m hoping to work it out soon.

Alan – I notice that you don’t have trackback links under your posts on your own site (in the usual “Trackback (0)” format). Have you implemented Tom Coates’ trackback suggestions from plasticbag.org? I think I read somewhere that the problem with his approach (which I find very interesting) is that it will send a new ping each time you update a post, even if you’re just tidying up punctuation or grammar. MT’s “vanilla” functionality is smart enough only to ping sites (including weblogs.com etc.) when the post is first published. This might be your issue?
